Description

This dataset includes occurrence (presence-only) records of bird species captured using mist nets in 13 localities within dry forest sites in the department of Zacapa, eastern Guatemala. Sampling was conducted in areas of seasonally dry tropical forest with varying degrees of anthropogenic disturbance.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 149 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Wild birds were captured using six 12-meter-long mist nets deployed over a two-day period at each site, operated from 6:30 am to 11:30 am. Sampling took place between March and October 2021 across 13 localities within seasonally dry tropical forest in eastern Guatemala. Sites varied in the degree of anthropogenic disturbance. Mist nets were checked frequently to reduce handling time and minimize stress. Captured birds were identified, and a small blood sample was collected via brachial venipuncture for the detection of avian malaria parasites (Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon) using PCR. All birds were released at the site of capture after sampling.

Study Extent The study was carried out in the Motagua Valley region, located in eastern Guatemala within the department of Zacapa, at elevations ranging from 300-900 m above sea level. Sampling took place between March and October 2021 across 13 localities within the study area.
